Pond Jump Guards FAQs

What is the recommended height for a pond jump guard?

While 300mm is a common standard starting height, the ideal measurement always depends on your specific pond layout and the size of your fish. A useful rule of thumb used by many installers is to set the guard height to roughly ten times the body height of your fish above the water level. This ensures an effective physical barrier without obstructing your view. Keep in mind that large, active koi—or raised ponds where the water level sits very close to the edge—often require panels taller than 300mm. If you are unsure, our team can review your measurements and offer expert advice before you place your order.

Can I install jump guards on a raised pond?

Yes, they are highly recommended for raised ponds. Because the water level in a raised pond is typically closer to the perimeter, fish are at a greater risk of jumping over the edge. To prevent this, the glass panels are secured using high-quality stainless steel fittings that can be safely anchored into brick, stone, timber, or supporting posts. Accurate measuring is essential to ensure the panels fit securely and form a continuous protective barrier. If you need guidance, our team is happy to advise on the best fixing positions and clamp spacing for your specific setup.

What glass is used for koi pond jump guards?

As standard, we supply 10mm toughened glass complete with polished edges and stainless steel fittings. This specific thickness provides the ideal balance of strength, durability, and added safety while maintaining a discreet appearance around your pond. Panel lengths are measured in millimetres or metres depending on your overall span. For longer runs that exceed practical limits for a single panel, multiple panels may be required to ensure maximum stability. Because pricing varies depending on the glass size, the number of panels needed, and the specific clamp configuration, our team is always happy to provide clear advice before manufacturing begins.

Do jump guards stop herons?

Pond jump guards act as both a visual and physical deterrent to predators like herons. While they do not completely enclose the pond, the vertical glass barrier makes it much more difficult for predators to access the water, significantly reducing the risk to your fish. However, if you live in a high-risk area for herons, additional protective measures may be advisable. Our glass guards are designed to provide added security without compromising the aesthetic appeal of your garden. If you are unsure what level of protection you need, our team can offer tailored guidance based on your specific location, pond size, and fish stock.
