Frameless Glass Balustrade

A Case Study on Glass Balustrade Installation: Ensuring Safety and Style

Origin Architectural recently worked with Hoben Decking Specialists on this magnificent post and rail system.

The glass balustrade was protecting a fall of more than 600mm. To comply with building regulations, it was necessary to have a handrail at the top of the balustrade. The system used was 42mm diameter grade 316 stainless steel. It was fully tested to the required line load test of 0.74Kn. This is line load test for a domestic balustrade that protects a fall of 600mm or more.

The customer wanted to have tinted glass. This was no problem for us to supply. The glass thickness was 10mm toughened which was tinted grey on both sides. While not entirely opaque, this gave the customer exactly the look that they wanted.

Once the glass was tightened within the clamp, it was secure within the fixing. As an additional security measure the glass was supplied with holes in each corner. This allowed Hoben Decking Specialists to use the safety pins that were supplied with the clamps to prevent the glass from slipping within the clamp.

In addition the customer wanted to have a handrail on the stairs. We subsequently manufactured stainless steel posts (without clamps) that connected to the posts with clamps on the top of the deck.

The customer was thrilled with the end result!
