FAQs

Table of contents
  • From finished floor level to the top of the Juliet balcony should not be less than 1.1 meters. If you are fixing beneath the opening using our base fixed point fixing system, the panel of glass should be 1.4 meters high with 0.3m beneath the opening and 1.1 meters above finished floor level. If you have an internal barrier such as a retaining wall on which the Juliet balcony is being secured, it may be that the glass barrier can be 1.1 meters less the height of the internal barrier.

  • The glass thickness that your Juliet balcony will require will usually depend on two things. Firstly the width of your balcony. The wider the balcony, the thicker the glass that you will usually require. Our frameless systems (Glide Fit and Skyforce) will use 17.5mm toughened laminate glass if the width is less than 1.7m and 21.5mm toughened laminate glass the width is more than 1.7m. Secondly whether you have a handrail. Our Portia Juliet balcony is framed at the top and bottom of the glass and can be fixed using 12mm toughened glass.

  • This depends on the system that you use. If you are fixing to steel, concrete or an aluminium frame, you can have a Juliet balcony using our frameless systems (Glide Fit and Skyforce) that is up to 3 meters wide. Our Portia (framed tube) system can be up to 2.6m wide. If the Juliet balcony is more than 3 meters then you should fix beneath the opening using our point fixings or side fixed channel. If you are using point fixings, you should have at least two panels of glass. The panels should not be more than 1.4 meters in width. If you are using side fixed channel, the panels of glass should not be more than 1.1 meters in width.

  • This depends on the system that you use. Building regulations stipulate that if your Juliet balcony is protecting a fall of 600mm or more then you should either have a handrail or a laminate glass. Our frameless systems (Glide Fit and Skyforce) are fully tested when fixed to steel, concrete, or a UPVC or aluminum frame without a handrail.

  • Having a glass Juliet balcony need not be expensive. Much of the cost is in the glass itself rather than the fixings. As a result our framed Portia Juliet balcony system (which usually uses 12mm toughened glass) is cheaper per meter than our frameless systems (Glide Fit and Skyforce) which usually use a thicker laminate glass such as 17.5mm and 21.5mm.

  • The answer is yes. Both of our frameless systems (Skyforce and Glide Fit) are fully tested when fixed to either a UPVC or aluminum frame. We would recommend that you have the frames powder coated to match the colour of your UPVC or aluminum door or window which we can do for a relatively small additional cost.

  • This will depend on the system that you use and the width of the balcony. Our frameless systems (Glide Fit and Skyforce) can be fixed using one panel of glass that is up to 3m long. If your opening is more than 3m, you should try to fix beneath the reveal using either our point fixings or side fixed channel. If you are using point fixings, the panels of glass should not be more than 1.4m in width. If you are using side fixed channel, the panels of glass should not be more than 1.1m in width.

  • The answer is yes. Our point fixings are supplied with a variety of thicknesses of back plate. The head of the point fixing is 50mm in diameter. The thickness of the back plate can be either 10mm, 20mm, 30mm, 40mm, 50mm or 100mm. This allows the panel of glass to stand off the wall and clear any obstacles that there may be.

  • Yes, this is no problem whatsoever. We can powder coat your metal work to any RAL colour. This can add to a few days to the lead time and there is a relatively small additional cost.

  • All of our Juliet balcony systems are fully tested. If you are in an exposed location such as a next to the sea or in a windy area, we would recommend using a thicker glass and/or have a handrail as an additional safety measure.

Juliet Balcony – UK Leading Supplier

Juliet Balcony

A Juliet Balcony is named after the balcony from which Juliet was courted by Romeo in Shakespeare’s play, Romeo & Juliet. A glass Juliet balcony  is not a balcony that you can walk on to but rather a panel of glass that spans the opening and protects against a fall.

To meet building regulations the height of the Juliet balcony should be 1100mm from finished floor level to the top of the barrier. If the Juliet balcony is protecting a fall of 600mm or more (which in most cases it will) it should either have a handrail and/or a laminate glass. In addition, the Juliet balcony will have to pass the required line load test. This is the pressure per meter that the Juliet balcony can withstand before it moves beyond 25mm in its fixings. The required line load test for a Juliet balcony at height is 0.74kN. All of our Juliet balconies are fully tested to the required line load test.

Here at Origin, we supply a wide range of Juliet balconies. We have two frameless systems, Glide Fit and Skyforce. This can be fixed up to spans of 3 meters. It can be fixed to any number of materials, including steel, concrete, UPVC frame, aluminum frame, timber or brickwork. Both systems are fully tested when fixed to steel, concrete, UPVC frame or aluminum frame. The frames can be powder coated to any RAL to match your existing door or window frame. Both systems usually use toughened laminate glass. If the balcony is less than 1.7m it would use toughened laminate glass. If the balcony is more than 1.7m it would use 21.5mm toughened laminate glass.

Our Portia Juliet balcony system, frames the glass at the top and the bottom of the panel of glass with a slotted tube bar. There are four fixings in either corner. A rubber gasket sits between the slotted tube at the top and the bottom of the panel of glass. Our Portia Juliet balcony system is usually sold with 12mm toughened glass. There is a noticeable difference in price between 12mm toughened glass and laminate glass. This makes our Portia Juliet balcony system cheaper than our frameless systems.

Our point fixings are stainless steel bolts that fix the glass directly to the structure of the building. They can be fixed either at the bottom of the panel of glass or at the side of the panel. For Juliet balconies that are over 2.5m wide, we would recommend fixing  beneath the opening. The Juliet balcony needs to be 1.1m from finished floor level to the top of the barrier. The height of the panel itself should be about 1.4m with 300mm beneath the reveal and 1100mm above the reveal.
